Junior Derby Classes

All practices are broken down by age and skill level. To determine skater placements, assessments are held at the end of each Basics and Beginners session.

BASICS & BEGINNERS

All new skaters start in one of our Basic & Beginners sessions. These classes meet once a week and cover basic skating form, stops, starts, and safe falls. Skaters will then start learning to skate in partnerships and in packs and will eventually work their way up to introductory, non-contact roller derby. At the end of each session, there will be a skills assessment to determine whether or not skaters are ready to move onto more advanced classes.

BEGINNING SKATERS – JRDA LEVEL 1

Skaters who have completed our Basics and Beginners session and are cleared by our coaching staff to move to Level 1. In Level 1,  skaters continue to refine their basic skating skills and practice non-contact roller derby.

INTERMEDIATE SKATERS – JRDA LEVEL 2

Once cleared for Level 2, skaters start to play positional, light contact roller derby. Practices include land drills for strength, skating skill and gameplay drills. They scrimmage each other and occasionally opposing teams from other leagues according to JRDA Level 2 standards.

ADVANCED SKATERS – JRDA LEVEL 3

Advanced skaters play full-contact roller derby by WFTDA rules. Level 3 skaters must meet the WFTDA minimum skill standards and be able to skate 27 laps in 5 minutes. Practices are a combination of skills and scrimmaging with a dedicated scrimmage practice on Saturdays.

All of our skaters learn to play by full WFTDA rules. We are proud members of the JRDA and are always looking for new opponents committed to high-level junior play.
